The World Within is built around the international and intercultural influences in John Coltrane’s music. Through reinterpretations and arrangements of Coltrane’s work, the project follows threads connected to Africa, Brazil, Spain, India, and the broader global imagination that shaped his later artistic world.
Rather than approaching this material as tribute alone, the performance treats Coltrane’s music as a living source of movement, exploration, and exchange. The band moves between written arrangements and open improvisation, creating a concert experience that feels immediate, adventurous, and fully alive on stage.
A graduate of Princeton University, saxophonist, flutist, and bandleader Irwin Hall spent years living in Japan and China and traveling throughout Europe, Africa, and Brazil in search of the deeper cultural currents that connect music across traditions. Those experiences helped shape a distinctive artistic voice that blends jazz improvisation with global musical influences into a powerful and immersive live performance experience.
Hall has toured the world with artists including Melody Gardot and Dee Dee Bridgewater and has appeared on major stages alongside Ms. Lauryn Hill, El Debarge, and more.
